1. The need to perform insulation monitoring

The importance, continuity, and readiness of the DC system with the power system are of utmost importance to the power system.

If the system is interrupted, it will cause a power outage for the entire system. Stopping operations to search for and fix the problem will cost a lot of money, not to mention the risk of fire and explosion that can occur if the system has a short circuit that is not controlled.

Therefore, regular maintenance of the power system is not enough, it is necessary to monitor insulation resistance and ground faults to maintain continuity for the entire system.
2. Details of insulation monitoring solutions

When a ground fault occurs in 1 phase:

It cannot create a closed circuit for normal equipment to detect the fault, the characteristics of the IT network ensure continuous power supply even though a 1-phase ground fault occurs. The characteristics of the IT network are similar to the DC power system used to supply Relays at Transmission & Distribution power stations.

Online insulation monitoring system & fault branch detection for IT networks & DC power

These online monitoring devices, specifically the Schneider Electric IM400, will directly inject low-frequency current at the main location, at the load supply branches, IFL12 sets & current transformers will be used to measure this current signal.

In case of a phase fault, the circuit will be closed:

  • The IM400 will report low system insulation resistance & alert the central monitoring system or via the mobile application
  • The IFL12 will indicate exactly which branch is faulted

And especially according to the regulations of Vietnam Electricity Group, Decision No. 897/QD-EVN dated July 2019, requiring “Equipping a high-sensitivity online DC ground fault monitoring system, monitoring ground resistance and quickly determining the ground fault point according to IEC61557-8 and IEC61557-9 (at least two warning thresholds) and ground fault monitoring system” then it can be said that the online insulation monitoring solution is a comprehensive solution to meet the requirements for specific systems as well as the requirements for monitoring the DC power supply to the Relay according to Decision No. 897/QD-EVN July 2019 by EVN.
