Causes of transformer damage
According to statistics, the rate of damage during the use of transformers is as follows:
- 10%: Due to aging process
- 20%: Due to adverse operation
- 30%: Due to poor maintenance

Cause analysis:
1. Aging
Represented in the relationship with temperature, moisture content, and duration of the load condition. At temperatures greater than 1400C, air bubbles are formed due to the decomposition of insulation. These air bubbles are a potential hazard in the vicinity of high-voltage stress areas. This can initiate electrical damage leading to puncture discharges, which is related to the maintenance of the transformer.
2. Improper maintenance
Poor maintenance on oil leakage areas, oil quality, and accessories such as tap changers, input bushings, and protection devices, will cause instability in the MBA. In addition to the above problems, there are a series of problems that need to be overcome at the site such as humidity, oxidation, solid contamination, air bubbles, overcurrent, overvoltage, overheating, and short circuits, … We must pay attention to all problems to protect the MBA. Preventive maintenance is considered the best measure to improve the reliability of the MBA. Some suitable maintenance methods will increase the life of the MBA, bringing many economic benefits.

Oil-type transformer maintenance
- Overview survey, analysis, and evaluation of the operating status of the MBA.
- Perform professional cleaning of the entire MBA.
- Periodic oil sample testing.
- Improve the design and installation of the MBA to suit operating requirements.
- Refill the correct type of transformer oil when the MBA is low on operating oil.
- Clean and tighten the terminals, and cable joints on the high and low-voltage sides.
- Check the insulation value of the MBA in the components: high voltage-shell, high voltage-low voltage, and low voltage-shell.
- Clean the shell and porcelain, and check the cables at the primary and secondary ends.
- Check the temperature of the MBA oil, and check the operation of the controller.

Dry-type transformer

- Perform professional cleaning of the entire MBA.
- Clean the high-voltage, low-voltage, MBA core, and cooling fan.
- Tighten all the high-voltage and low-voltage wire ends of the MBA.
- Check the operating temperature of the MBA, the temperature controller, and the MBA cooling fan.
- Check the insulation value of the transformer in the components: high voltage-shell, high voltage-low voltage, and low voltage-shell.
- Check the high voltage (dielectric test) if necessary and requested.
- Consulting on operation and reinforcement of suitable transformer ground.
